Bangkok: The Department of Fisheries is concerned about Malaysia's proposal to relax conditions for sea bass. The Thai Department of Fisheries is currently evaluating a proposal from Malaysia to ease import restrictions on white snapper originating from MYGAP-certified farms. The primary concern is that an increase in import volume could negatively affect domestic prices.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Watcharapol Khaokham, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, shared updates on the ongoing discussions regarding shrimp import controls and white snapper exports between Thailand and Malaysia. He mentioned that the proposal involves approximately 60 MYGAP-certified farms, which would be allowed to bypass quarantine at customs pending residue testing. This move aims to streamline the import process but raises concerns over the potential impact on domestic market prices.
Moreover, Thailand is gearing up for negotiations with Malaysia to facilitate the acceptance of all types of Thai shrimp products. A new round of discussions concerning import-export regulations is scheduled for the first week of September, indicating a proactive approach by Thailand in addressing these trade matters.
