Bangkok: Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, a party-list MP and leader of the People's Party, criticized the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) for filing lawsuits intended to silence individuals who revealed alleged collusion in the Senate elections. He urged the Election Commission to exercise its authority properly, stressing the importance of bringing the case to court.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nattapong responded to the DSI's statement about suing those who leaked investigation findings in the Senate collusion case, questioning whether such actions represent a SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation). He noted that the public deserves to know the truth, regardless of its source, and expressed concern that the government might use classified information or legal measures to suppress the truth.
Mr. Nattapong emphasized that if the government is genuinely committed to transparency, it should avoid making statements that discourage public discourse. He highlighted the lack of response from the Election Commission, even as the deadline for deciding whether to escalate the case to the Supreme Court nears. The Election Commission's decision is expected by August 28th. Addressing claims that some senators might face repercussions while others with ties to political parties or ministers escape accountability, Mr. Nattapong expressed full support for the Election Commission. He argued that all presented evidence should be substantial enough to conclude that election fraud occurred during the Senate election.
He insisted that credible evidence should be brought before the court, as the Election Commission lacks the authority to determine guilt or innocence. Mr. Nattapong urged the Election Commission to act lawfully, warning that misuse of power could backfire on the Commission itself. He mentioned the possibility of legal actions against the Election Commission if any abuse of power is detected, and reiterated the anticipation for a clear decision on August 28th.
