Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has unanimously decided to pursue criminal charges against 28 unqualified parliamentary candidates who applied despite lacking the necessary qualifications.
According to Thai News Agency, at its 51st meeting on June 4, 2026, the ECT resolved to take legal action against these candidates for party-list parliamentary seats. The charges are based on the candidates' knowingly consenting to political parties nominating them for the party-list election despite lacking the required qualifications or possessing prohibited characteristics. This act is a violation of Section 151 of the 2018 Act on the Election of Members of the House of Representatives.
Section 151 outlines the penalties for such offenses, including imprisonment ranging from 1 to 10 years, fines between 20,000 to 200,000 baht, and a 20-year revocation of voting rights as ordered by the court.
