Taipei: Taiwan said there were no surprises from the meeting between the Chinese and US leaders. A Taiwanese government spokesman stated today that nothing surprising has happened from the summit between the leaders of China and the United States in Beijing, and reiterated that China should cease its military pressure on Taiwan, as such behavior poses a real threat to peace.
According to Thai News Agency, Chinese President Xi Jinping held a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump this morning, with Xi warning Trump that differences of opinion on Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory, could lead relations between the two countries down a dangerous path and potentially result in conflict.
Liang Wen-jie, Vice Chairman and Spokesperson of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, stated in Taipei that Taiwan is almost always one of the most important topics of discussion in meetings between China and the United States. He added that Taiwan currently has no surprising information and will continue to maintain close communication with the U.S., noting that claims of conflict are something that have been raised before.
Mr. Liang also stated that the real threat to peace, which risks causing a crisis, is the continued military threats by China, not the desire of the Taiwanese people to preserve their way of life. He added that if maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is the greatest common goal between China and the United States, then the Chinese Communist Party should first restrain its own military intimidation tactics.
