Johannesburg: South African police are hunting for a group of 12 gunmen who opened fire in the early hours of this morning, killing nine people and injuring ten others. The South African Police Force issued a statement saying the incident occurred before 1:00 AM local time today, which corresponds to before 6:00 AM Thai time.
According to Thai News Agency, twelve assailants in a white minibus and a silver four-door car opened fire on customers of a bar in the municipality of Ranwest City, southwest of Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city. They indiscriminately fired on people as they fled in their vehicles after the attack. Police are currently pursuing the suspects and will investigate their motive.
The area where the incident occurred has high rates of unemployment and poverty due to decreased gold mining activity. Meanwhile, South Africa, the continent's largest economy, has one of the highest crime rates in the world, with an average of 60 murders per day.
