Bangkok: Deputy Prime Minister Sopon Saram has pledged to tackle Thailand's ongoing political crisis within four months, while also laying the groundwork for a robust democratic framework. During a visit to Government House, Sopon emphasized the urgency of addressing Thailand's pressing issues, including drug problems, and announced plans to engage the Prime Minister on these concerns.
According to Thai News Agency, Sopon arrived at Government House at 10:35 a.m. to pay respects at the spirit house and shrine of his ancestors, acknowledging his appointment as a significant honor bestowed by His Majesty the King. In his subsequent interview, Sopon highlighted the challenges faced by the current minority and interim government, which operates under a limited timeframe amidst political, economic, and social turmoil. He expressed a commitment to implementing direct actions, rather than merely proposing policies, to improve the country's situation in the short term.
Sopon identified social issues, particularly drug addiction and public health, as major challenges, stressing the importance of decentralization and oversight of provincial clusters. He called on the Prime Minister to address drug issues, drawing on his two years of experience combating the problem. Sopon highlighted the success of a locally funded drug rehabilitation center in Buriram, which has helped over 1,600 individuals without relying on central government funds. He emphasized the potential for national success through collective effort and community involvement.
When questioned about Pol. Maj. Gen. Wichai Sangprapai's potential involvement in drug-related matters, Sopon clarified that Wichai is a friend, not a collaborator in these efforts.
