Bangkok: The Bus Terminal Authority (BTA) reports a significant increase in travelers returning to their hometowns for the Songkran festival, with today expected to witness the highest travel volume, reaching up to 180,000 people.

According to Thai News Agency, the BTA has been proactive in managing the surge by providing sufficient buses and drivers to ensure smooth travel. Mr. Atthawit Rakchamroon, Managing Director of Transport Co., Ltd. (BKS), highlighted the busy travel atmosphere at the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak) or Mochit 2, as it marks the last working day before the Songkran holiday. He anticipates between 160,000 to 180,000 passengers utilizing over 7,000-8,000 bus trips, which include both company and partner-operated buses. To accommodate the influx, approximately 1,200 non-regular buses, including 30 additional ones, have been arranged.

Data from April 9, 2026, showed a total of 103,892 passengers, with 58,431 traveling outbound and 45,461 returning. The day saw 6,096 bus trips, split between 3,067 outbound and 3,029 return trips, with the service running efficiently, ensuring no passengers were left stranded.

During the Songkran festival, authorities caution travelers to be wary of scams and recommend purchasing tickets only from authorized counters.
