Mr. Padungsak Surujikamthornwattana, Inspector General of the Ministry of Transport and chairman of today’s meeting, stated that from today onwards, the Songkran festival will begin. People will be arriving at their destinations and celebrating, which will involve consuming alcoholic beverages. This will lead to an increase in accidents due to drunk driving. Therefore, he instructed provincial-level agencies to increase vigilance and closely monitor the situation to prevent drunk driving and avoid accidents.

Statistics from the past three days show that most accidents are caused by risky behaviors of both drivers and other road users. Therefore, the Road Safety Center (RSC) has instructed provinces to publicize the importance of assessing drivers’ physical fitness before driving. If a driver is not fit, they should rest or avoid driving. They should also promote caution during Songkran water festivities, urging drivers not t
o directly splash water on motorcycles as this could cause them to lose control and lead to accidents, and to avoid playing water games in the middle of the road as this could result in being hit by a vehicle. If possible, drivers should avoid sitting or standing in the back of pickup trucks while playing water games, as this could lead to accidents from falling off the moving vehicle.
