Bangkok: Sompong Amornvivat, a Pheu Thai Party list MP and former leader, has announced his resignation from the party, citing frustration with internal management issues. He directed his team to submit his resignation to the Election Commission, clarifying that his decision was not influenced by the party's opposition status or declining popularity. Sompong expressed concern over the party's inability to address significant priorities and internal frustrations that have been present since before the 2023 election.
According to Thai News Agency, Sompong highlighted the party's struggles, particularly in the upper northern region, where he played a key role before his demotion. He pointed to the situation in Chiang Mai, where the party supported Pichai Lertphong-adisorn for two terms as provincial administrative organization president. Sompong criticized Pichai for not coordinating with MPs or candidates, which he believes led to the party's collapse in the region. He also mentioned a contentious candidate selection process in Lamphun Province, where party interference disregarded local feedback.
Sompong emphasized that his resignation was a personal decision, made without consulting Deputy Leader Chulaphan Amornvivat. He stated that his departure should not be seen as abandoning the party during challenging times, emphasizing his longstanding dedication to Pheu Thai and the Shinawatra family. Sompong expressed gratitude to key figures, including former Prime Ministers Thaksin Shinawatra and Yingluck Shinawatra, for their support throughout his political journey.
At 84, Sompong is contemplating retirement but remains open to advising the next generation of politicians. He insists that no political party has attempted to recruit him, although he maintains connections with several. Sompong is committed to addressing unresolved issues for the people of Chiang Mai and Thailand before considering full retirement from politics.
