Bangkok: Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew has firmly dismissed rumors suggesting that he is being considered as the Bhumjaithai Party's candidate for Prime Minister. This clarification comes in the wake of a poster circulating, which features Sihasak alongside Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the party leader, and Ekniti Nitithanpraphas, inviting the public to a policy statement event scheduled for December 24th. Sihasak emphasized his commitment to foreign affairs, stating, "No, I am not. My primary responsibility is foreign affairs, which is my role."
According to Thai News Agency, Sihasak explained that he has not been approached by Anutin or any party officials regarding a candidacy for the prime ministerial position. He mentioned that the Bhumjaithai Party already has two candidates under consideration, though he refrained from confirming their identities, suggesting that inquiries should be directed to Ekniti and Supajee Suthamphan.
When questioned about the possibility of accepting a nomination if approached by Anutin, Sihasak reiterated his lack of political aspirations and expressed his intention to remain focused on foreign affairs. He noted that he has not received any invitations to run for the position, as the party appears to have settled on two prospective candidates.
In light of speculations about his potential return as Minister of Foreign Affairs should the Bhumjaithai Party lead the next government, Sihasak expressed uncertainty, reiterating his current engagement with foreign affairs.
Meanwhile, Ekniti declined to comment on the candidacy matter when approached at the Government House, citing that he was occupied with a phone call. Anutin also remained tight-lipped about the party's prime ministerial candidate, even when presented with a promotional image related to the policy unveiling event.
Additionally, when Ms. Sabida Thaiseth, Minister of Culture, was questioned about her inclusion in the promotional image and potential candidacy, she unequivocally denied any such intentions by raising her hand and stating, "No."
