Bangkok: The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has ordered Upbit Thailand to expedite customer asset investigations following news of Upbit Korea's hack.
According to Thai News Agency, the SEC has directed Upbit Thailand to urgently verify customer assets after reports emerged of a hack at Upbit Korea via the Solana network. Mr. Anek Yoo-yuen, Deputy Secretary-General and Spokesperson of the SEC, highlighted concerns due to Upbit Thailand using the same custodian service as its Korean counterpart.
Today, the SEC collaborated with UPBIT Thailand to scrutinize the company's operations and inspect customer assets deposited with them to ensure all assets are intact. The SEC has advised investors to stay informed through the company's official communication channels.
Further reports indicate that Upbit, a prominent South Korean cryptocurrency exchange, experienced a hack this morning. Wallets associated with the Solana ecosystem were affected, with some tokens being transferred to external wallets. This breach resulted in losses of approximately 54 billion won, equivalent to about 1.1 billion baht. This incident is the second major attack on Upbit, following a $50 million Ethereum hack in 2019.
