Sea Turtle Expels Swallowed Wristband After 27-Day Treatment

Phuket: A sea turtle that ingested a wristband at the Similan Islands has successfully expelled it after 27 days of treatment, bringing relief to conservationists and marine officials.

According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources announced the positive outcome after the turtle, which had swallowed the wristband given by a tourist, was monitored and treated intensively. Mr. Pinsak Suraswadi, Director-General of the department, highlighted the report from Dr. Patcharaporn Kaewmuang, a veterinary specialist at the Sirindhorn Rare Marine Animal Rescue Center. The turtle was discovered near Koh Ha-Hok by park officials and taken to the Upper Andaman Marine Resources Research Center for immediate care.

The veterinary team utilized X-rays and a barium swallow procedure to detect the wristband and evaluate the turtle's condition. In addition to the yellow wristband, which measured 20 centimeters in circumference, the turtle's digestive system contained banana leaves, pineapple leaves, and papaya seeds-none of which are typical components of its diet.

The decision was made to avoid surgery due to the risk of damaging internal organs. Fortunately, the turtle expelled the wristband without any complications by December 18, and its health appears to be in good condition. The veterinary team is now conducting a final health check as they prepare to release the turtle back into its natural habitat. Authorities remind tourists to adhere to guidelines and avoid giving foreign objects to marine animals, as this can pose serious risks to their health.
