Royal Thai Police Issue Safety Advisory for Loi Krathong Festival.

Bangkok: Royal Thai Police have issued a safety warning ahead of the Loi Krathong festival, urging the public to remain vigilant to ensure a safe celebration. They have outlined six key considerations to help mitigate potential risks during the festive activities dedicated to the Goddess of the River. According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Sirawat Deepo, deputy spokesman of the Royal Thai Police, conveyed the national police chief, Pol. Gen. Kittirat Panphet's concerns about public safety. With festivities set for 15 November 2024, the police chief is particularly worried about the risk of crimes during the celebration, which traditionally involves floating krathongs along waterways to seek forgiveness from the goddess of water. The festival, also marked by the Yi Peng tradition in the north, involves releasing floating lanterns into the sky, an activity that draws large crowds. To enhance public safety, the Royal Thai Police recommend several measures. First, they stress water safety, advising agains t floating krathongs directly in the water without proper supervision, especially for children. Life jackets or life rings should be readily available at floating sites. Additionally, the public is encouraged to avoid crowded areas, particularly along riverbanks and ports, due to potential dangers from crowding or criminal activities. Fire safety is another major concern, with a strong advisory against the use of firecrackers and fireworks to prevent injuries and fires. The police also urge participants to float lanterns only in designated areas to avoid disrupting flights or causing fires near airports or restricted zones. Environmental considerations are also highlighted, with a recommendation to use biodegradable materials for krathongs to prevent water pollution. The police specifically discourage the use of foam, plastic, or bread krathongs. Finally, they warn of potential scams related to online Loi Krathong activities, where fraudsters may exploit the festival to obtain personal information or distr ibute malicious software. The Royal Thai Police have provided several hotlines for public assistance, available 24 hours a day, including emergency hotline 191, medical services hotline 1669, water services hotline 1196, and fire services hotline 199.
