Nakhon sawan: The Royal Irrigation Department is closely monitoring the Chao Phraya River as water levels upstream continue to rise. "Witthaya" emphasized the need for vigilance and preparation to handle the increasing water flow from upstream areas.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Witthaya Kaewmee, Director-General of the Royal Irrigation Department, stated that floodwaters from the upper areas of the Chao Phraya River basin are gradually reaching the area above the Chao Phraya Dam, with volumes expected to rise consistently. As of 6:00 AM on August 24, 2026, the water level at monitoring station C.2 in Mueang Nakhon Sawan District was recorded at approximately 936 cubic meters per second, resulting in a rise in the upstream water level of the Chao Phraya Dam to +15.94 meters Mean Sea Level (MSL). The department is maintaining control over the water discharge at 450 cubic meters per second downstream of the dam.
The Royal Irrigation Department is implementing a water management strategy to maintain appropriate water levels upstream of the Chao Phraya Dam. This aims to accommodate the incoming water mass and minimize downstream impacts. Water is being diverted into the eastern and western irrigation systems, with irrigation projects in the area urged to monitor upstream water volumes closely. It is expected that the water flow through the Chao Phraya Dam will increase to between 500 and 700 cubic meters per second, which may result in a rise in water levels downstream by approximately 1 to 1.5 meters, from Sapphaya District in Chai Nat Province to several subdistricts in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, yet remaining below riverbanks.
Mr. Witthaya also stated, 'I have instructed Irrigation Office 12 and related agencies to monitor the water situation closely, particularly focusing on volumes from the upper areas of the Chao Phraya River basin. Furthermore, I have stressed the importance of preparing machinery, equipment, and personnel to address potential flooding and provide timely public assistance.' The Royal Irrigation Department has issued Warning Notice No. 7, dated August 24, 2026, to the governors of the seven provinces within the basin, including Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Suphan Buri, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, and Lop Buri, as well as related agencies. They are urged to disseminate information to the public along both banks of the Chao Phraya River, encouraging vigilance and adherence to official information. The department is committed to managing water resources in line with the situation, prioritizing public impact.
