Rangsiman Rome Challenges Speaker’s Approach Following Legal Committee’s 80 Vote

Bangkok:Rangsiman Rome, a Member of Parliament from the People's Party and Chairman of the House Committee on Law, Justice, and Human Rights, has expressed significant opposition to the approach of the Speaker of the House. This comes after an 80 vote by the House of Representatives' Legal Committee to reject the Speaker's proposed guidelines.

According to Thai News Agency, the rejection pertains to a circular letter sent to committee chairpersons outlining operational guidelines. Rangsiman questioned the authenticity of this three-page document, noting the absence of the Speaker's signature and any official seal. He emphasized that these guidelines lack legal or regulatory authority, and therefore, cannot compel compliance.

Rangsiman highlighted several investigations undertaken by the Law Committee, including a 40 million baht bribery case, local government examinations, and the attempted assassination of Mr. Kamolsak Leewamoh, a Member of Parliament from Narathiwat Province. He described the guidelines as a potential power consolidation effort within Parliament. The committee has decided to place this matter on the agenda for further discussion.

He further stated the need for discussion on the committee's authority to act, planning to summon Mr. Sophon Saram, the Speaker of the House, for clarification on November 12th. Rangsiman expressed hope for Mr. Sophon's cooperation in this matter.

The absence of procedural legality in the circular raised concerns among committee members, who agreed that the approach was unacceptable and warranted investigation. Despite differing interpretations of regulations, Rangsiman affirmed that the committee's methods remain unchanged and that they will continue to invite external individuals for information on new issues. He underscored the importance of not approving any actions deemed unconstitutional or contrary to the law.
