Bangkok: The Prime Minister has confirmed his sincere intention to amend the Constitution and has invited Bowornsak Uwanno to assist in the process. He expressed confidence that the first referendum would be held within the four-month period.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul addressed concerns regarding the timing of a referendum on constitutional amendments. He mentioned that while the system is ready, coordination with the Election Commission (EC) is necessary because of its connection to upcoming elections due to the dissolution of Parliament. Conducting the referendum before Parliament dissolves could also result in budget savings. Additionally, the outcome of the referendum would serve as a reference for the subsequent government to continue the process.
When questioned about the Constitutional Court's stance on citizens' rights to directly amend the constitution, Mr. Anutin refrained from elaborating. He revealed that Mr. Bowornsak Uwanno, the former chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, has been invited to assist in the effort. This invitation demonstrates a genuine intention to involve legal and constitutional amendment experts in the government's work.
