Bangkok: The Prime Minister has denied reports about the reopening of the Thai-Cambodian border checkpoint, expressing his intention to formally establish a government before taking such steps. He emphasized that there are numerous procedures to be completed and is confident that the public will understand the situation.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the rumors surrounding the reopening of the border checkpoint. He expressed confusion over the distorted news and clarified that, to his knowledge, Deputy Defense Minister General Nattapol Nakphanit had not made any definitive statements on the matter. He stressed that the priority should always be the Thai people.
When questioned about the opposition to the border crossing, the Prime Minister stated his desire to formally assume his position before making any policy announcements. He noted that current actions are under the jurisdiction of the existing government and not his administration.
Further inquiries were made regarding the stance of Lieutenant General Boonsin Phadklang, Commander of Army Region 2, and Army Spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvari, who opposed the opening due to concerns about gambling and scams. Mr. Anutin responded that the checkpoint's reopening could not proceed without incident-free conditions and that numerous agreements must be finalized before any implementation. He reiterated the need for his government to officially take office before issuing directives or policies.
In response to whether the public needed further clarification, the Prime Minister asserted that the public already understands the situation.
