Bangkok: Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, addressed concerns regarding rumors of a potential 36% tax imposition by the United States on Thailand. He clarified that these claims are unfounded and confirmed that discussions with the US Trade Policy Working Group are ongoing.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pichai emphasized that the news suggesting an 18-36% tariff on Thailand is incorrect. He stated that the Thai team has not yet determined the specific tax rate that the US might impose, and an official announcement will be made once all tax rates are finalized. He urged the public to wait for these official results.
Mr. Pichai also noted that details from the discussions remain confidential, as per negotiation agreements. He assured that the negotiations aim to maximize benefits for both countries, ensuring a win-win and sustainable agreement. The discussions with the United States are seen as a positive step towards mutual compromise.
The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the involvement of various Thai ministries, including Commerce, Finance, Industry, Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, and Public Health, along with the Board of Investment, in preparing a revised proposal to submit to the US before July 9. He expressed hope that the United States would consider a tax rate favorable to Thailand.
Looking beyond the July 9 deadline, Mr. Pichai indicated that discussions would continue to finalize a contract, acknowledging that internal approval processes in both countries might extend the timeline. He emphasized the importance of securing a tax rate that maintains Thailand's competitiveness on the global stage.
