Bangkok: The Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry, Arsit Sampanrat, has addressed the controversy surrounding a video clip showing him bowing to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. He clarified that the gesture was an apology for a mistake rather than an expression of gratitude for retaining his position.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Arsit explained the circumstances surrounding the video, which was presented by MP Adisorn Piangkes during the Budget Act discussions in the House of Representatives. The video, recorded on August 27, 2026, showed Mr. Sampanrat bowing as he encountered Mr. Anutin at the Government House entrance. Allegations arose suggesting that the bow was a sign of deference linked to his position security, claims Mr. Sampanrat firmly denied.
Mr. Arsit elaborated that the bow was an immediate apology for a misunderstanding involving himself and a working group, who mistakenly assumed the Prime Minister and the Minister of Interior were informed about a certain matter. He expressed surprise upon learning they were not aware and felt compelled to apologize on the spot. The incident, captured by a reporter, was misinterpreted and caused unwarranted damage to his reputation and that of the Ministry.
Mr. Arsit further clarified his role and responsibilities, highlighting his dedication to supporting his superiors and implementing their policies. He recounted his past achievements in various roles, including leading Lamphun Province to become the cleanest in Thailand and managing the COVID-19 outbreak in Tak Province. These accomplishments, he noted, reflect his commitment to service and his intent to work collaboratively with his team.
Concluding his remarks, Mr. Arsit emphasized his pride in his career and the acknowledgment he has received from superiors.
