Parents Turn to Pawning to Meet Back-to-School Costs

Trang: The Trang Municipal Pawnshop was bustling with activity as parents flocked to pawn their belongings to obtain money for expenses, especially school fees, uniforms, and school supplies for their children at the start of the new school term.

According to Thai News Agency, the Trang Municipal Pawnshop witnessed parents pawning assets such as gold, televisions, tools, and agricultural equipment to gather funds for essential expenses. The back-to-school season has prompted a surge in activity as families seek to cover school-related costs.

Pawn shops in the area have prepared over 80 million baht in reserves to meet the increased demand for their services. In an effort to support the public, they have waived interest for loans of no more than 3,000 baht per month. The shops reported a rise in users from approximately 300 people per day previously, primarily due to the suspension of rubber tapping. This suspension has left many families without income and facing financial challenges.
