Bangkok: Nikorn Chamnong has officially taken up his role as a party-list Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bhumjaithai Party, bringing the active number of MPs in the Parliament to 499. In his new role, he has moved swiftly to address pressing issues, including the establishment of a special committee aimed at tackling the PM2.5 dust pollution problem. He has forwarded proposals to the Cabinet for immediate action on this environmental concern.
According to Thai News Agency, the House of Representatives meeting, under the leadership of Speaker Sophon Saram, saw the official reassignment of Mr. Nikorn as he replaced Ms. Sabida Thaiseth, who recently resigned. Mr. Nikorn completed the formalities by taking the oath of office before commencing his parliamentary responsibilities. With the current count of 499 MPs, the Parliament now requires a quorum of at least 250 members to conduct its proceedings.
In anticipation of the Cabinet's policy statement to Parliament scheduled for April 9-10, Mr. Sophon made an announcement regarding lunch provisions during these joint sessions. The Secretariat of the Parliament has assured that meals will continue to be provided for all members in attendance.
The session proceeded with a vote on an urgent oral motion concerning the PM2.5 dust crisis, presented by four political parties. Having concluded the debate last week, the meeting reached a consensus to forward recommendations to the Cabinet for systematic intervention. Additionally, a special committee comprising 19 members has been established, tasked with evaluating the issue over a 60-day period.
