Bangkok: Beware of a new scam involving video clips of reporters that trick people into clicking or scanning a QR code, potentially leading to financial theft. Deputy Government Spokesperson Anukul Prueknusak has issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant against such fraudulent schemes.
According to Thai News Agency, criminal gangs are continuously adapting their methods to deceive individuals despite ongoing government efforts to curb these activities. The latest tactic involves call center gangs stealing video clips of journalists and news anchors. These clips warn about scams and offer information on how to claim refunds for fraudulent damages. However, the clips come with a QR code purportedly from a "Center for Asset Allocation Rights" or "Legal Advisor," along with a contact channel via the Line application, misleading victims into believing they can recover their losses.
Mr. Anukul emphasized that these clips are fraudulent and could result in further financial losses if individuals fall for the scam. He urged the public to scrutinize any refund claims by verifying their eligibility for a cash-on-deposit rebate through the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) website at www.amlo.go.th.
