Bangkok: The National Water Resources Management Agency (NWRA) has issued a warning for 15 provinces, advising vigilance due to the possibility of accumulated rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters within a 12-hour period. This alert is in effect for the period between May 31 and June 1 and is attributed to the strong southwest monsoon and a monsoon trough affecting upper Thailand. These weather conditions are expected to result in increased rainfall and heavy rain, especially in low-lying areas, urban communities, and regions susceptible to flash flooding.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chayant Muangsong, Secretary-General of the National Water Resources Office (NWRO), indicated that the NWRO’s forecast for the risk of heavy rainfall spans from May 29 to June 1, 2026. The influence of the southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, along with a monsoon trough moving across upper Thailand, will lead to substantial rainfall in several areas.
The latest analysis and assessment have identified specific regions that need heightened monitoring due to potential accumulated rainfall exceeding 100 millimeters over a 12-hour span. These regions include the Northern Region with Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Tak; the Eastern Region with Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat; the Western Region with Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, and Prachuap Khiri Khan; and the Southern Region with Chumphon, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Krabi.
Mr. Muangsong emphasized that residents in high-risk areas should remain vigilant and take extra precautions, particularly in urban communities prone to frequent flooding due to inadequate drainage systems, and areas at risk of flash floods and landslides. Phuket province, in particular, requires careful observation due to its geographical constraints and limited capacity to manage heavy rainfall, which could disrupt transportation and daily activities.
The National Water Resources Management Committee (NWRC) has stressed the importance of continuous monitoring by relevant agencies of the rainfall and water situation. These agencies are urged to prepare drainage systems, machinery, equipment, and emergency response plans to provide timely assistance to the public in case of emergencies.
