Bangkok: The national police chief has confirmed that the police force will continue its efforts to suppress drugs across the country, following comments made by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra regarding a potential war on drugs. National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittirat Panpetch stated that while he would not comment on Thaksin's remarks made during his visit to Udon Thani province, the police are actively engaged in drug crackdowns, aligning with government policy. According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Gen. Kittirat emphasized that the police are executing their duties to prevent and suppress drug-related activities. He noted that Thaksin's words were merely the statements of an individual, and the police's mission remains guided by previously established government directives, which prioritize the elimination of drugs. He also mentioned that any province found with drug issues would lead to consequences for local authorities, as stated by the former prime minister. Pol. Gen. Kittirat further assure d that past operations have led to a significant number of drug-related arrests and prosecutions, exceeding 100% in some cases, showcasing the success of their efforts. He clarified that the presence of drugs in Thailand does not indicate a local production base; rather, they are smuggled into the country across borders. The police have been collaborating with local security agencies to monitor and intercept these smuggling routes. Plans are underway to target small-time dealers operating within village communities in upcoming operations.
