Ministry of Interior Calls for Reform of Donation-Soliciting Foundations

Bangkok:The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior has announced the need for reform of foundations that solicit donations for purposes other than their intended use. He stressed the importance of submitting all financial records by November 10th, following a complaint by the local administration that led to police involvement for investigation and possible prosecution.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Arsit Sampantharat, the Permanent Secretary, discussed the lawsuit filed by the Department of Provincial Administration against the Good Deeds Foundation. He highlighted that the Investigation and Legal Affairs Division is responsible for handling foundation registrations, with the Permanent Secretary acting as the registrar. The failure of foundations to report financial activities over time has resulted in significant irregularities, prompting officials to investigate foundations, especially those involving prominent figures.

The Permanent Secretary emphasized that most foundations are engaged in social welfare activities, such as aiding disaster victims and supporting hospitals and schools. However, improper management by some administrators necessitates legal action. The Department of Provincial Administration has already filed a police report regarding the Good Deeds Organization's fundraising practices, and if irregularities are confirmed, legal action will be taken against those responsible.

The Ministry of Interior has mandated the submission of financial records by November 10th. Mr. Sampantharat clarified that the foundation in question involves multiple individuals who share responsibility for the financial disclosures. The Ministry has filed a police report to facilitate further investigation, and it remains the police's duty to pursue legal proceedings. The review of all foundations associated with well-known individuals is ongoing to ensure compliance with regulations.
