Bangkok: Minister Suchart Chomklin of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has directed the Department of Mineral Resources to maintain round-the-clock surveillance of landslide situations. This initiative aims to ensure the safety of residents in regions susceptible to geological disasters.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Suchart has expressed significant concern for communities located in areas with a heightened risk of landslides and flash floods, particularly in the northern provinces such as Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Mae Hong Son, and Tak, as well as the central province of Kanchanaburi and the eastern province of Trat. With heavy and sustained rainfall anticipated from August 31st to September 4th, 2026, the Minister has instructed the Department to establish a system for continuous monitoring and forecasting of landslide-prone areas. This includes coordinating with a geological disaster warning network comprising over 45,000 individuals in these high-risk zones.
Residents in these vulnerable areas are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and monitor rainfall levels, particularly in regions where rain exceeds 100 mm in 24 hours. They are encouraged to watch for signs like muddy water and debris and be ready to evacuate to safer locations if necessary. Additionally, 24-hour monitoring teams are urged to remain on standby to respond to any emergencies.
Mr. Yongyuth Nakaviroj, Director-General of the Department of Mineral Resources, highlighted that the Geohazard Operations Center will be actively engaged in providing real-time data on landslide-prone areas. This information will be relayed to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation's War Room to facilitate public warnings through cell broadcasts. Furthermore, the data will aid the Flood Relief Coordination Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment by offering crucial information and reports to assist in flood relief operations.
