Bangkok: The Minister of Defence has articulated a clear mission for the armed forces, focusing on the procurement of high-quality equipment and the enhancement of soldiers' quality of life. This mission was detailed during a parliamentary session concerning the government's policy statement by Lieutenant General Adul Boonthamcharoen, Minister of Defence.
According to Thai News Agency, Lieutenant General Adul emphasized that national security is contingent on maintaining a combat-ready armed forces. This necessitates the modernization of military capabilities to effectively counter contemporary threats, incorporating advancements in technology and intelligence. The procurement process for military equipment is to be cost-effective, transparent, and verifiable, with a strong emphasis on self-reliance.
The Ministry of Defence operates two research and development engineering entities: the Defence Technology Development Institute and Bangkok Dock Company Limited. Additionally, the Defence Industry and Military Energy Center plays a pivotal role in developing the defense industry in line with government policy. This initiative aims to boost national revenue and promote long-term self-reliance. Collaboration with the private sector is also a priority, with efforts to strengthen the defense industry and facilitate the export of military equipment like armored vehicles, underscoring the effectiveness of Thai-made military products.
Lieutenant General Adul further elaborated on the volunteer military policy, which seeks to provide new opportunities for national service. This initiative aims to cultivate skilled soldiers who are valued and dignified, offering them careers and future prospects. Volunteer soldiers are provided with appropriate compensation, welfare, educational qualifications, and vocational training in their fields of interest. Post-discharge career options include continued military service. The Minister views volunteer soldiers as a crucial force for the nation and a long-term human capital asset. As such, he announced the formation of a working group to thoroughly develop the volunteer military program, inviting suggestions to enhance human resources to ensure the military effectively protects national sovereignty and serves the nation's interests.
