Minister Chusak Addresses Misuse of Corpses in Buddhist Teachings.

Bangkok: Mr. Chusak Sirinil, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office and supervisor of the National Office of Buddhism (NOB), has expressed concerns regarding the alleged use of corpses for training in clairvoyance at a monastery. He stated that such practices are a distortion of Buddhist teachings and are not permissible under Buddhist principles. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chusak has instructed the NOB to engage with various monastery groups to address the issue, emphasizing that he believes such activities cannot be sanctioned. The minister highlighted the importance of investigating the matter thoroughly to determine whether it constitutes a criminal or disciplinary violation. In light of reports involving 71 corpses potentially linked to these activities, Mr. Chusak underscored the necessity for the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) to evaluate the situation. He stressed that if these practices are found to contravene Buddhist teachings, appropriate measures must be implemented to p revent recurrence. The minister acknowledged the existence of such distortions in various locations, which mislead Buddhists about the true principles of Buddhism. Mr. Chusak also addressed the potential for criminal and disciplinary offenses, noting that the police would handle criminal matters, while the Sangha Council would be notified of disciplinary breaches. He emphasized the need for proactive measures to address these issues, working closely with the Office of the Basic Education Commission to ensure comprehensive oversight and policy implementation. Regarding the ordination of new monks, the minister mentioned that stringent measures must be adopted to prevent misuse of the saffron robe. He reiterated the necessity of maintaining the integrity of Buddhist institutions, despite current challenges that may undermine their reputation. Mr. Chusak also expressed concern about drug trafficking infiltrating temples, asserting that monitoring and preventive actions are crucial to safeguard these spiritual havens. He confirmed that measures like urine tests for monks are already being implemented to deter such illicit activities, emphasizing the need for rigorous enforcement to uphold the sanctity of Buddhist institutions.
