MEA Advances with Removal of Electricity Poles and Cables for Streets Free of Visual Clutter

Bangkok: MEA (Metropolitan Electricity Authority) is making significant progress in its initiative to remove electricity poles and communication cables, aiming for a "beautiful, pole-free street" along Pracha Rat Sai 2 Road. The project is set to conclude with the complete removal of these structures by the night of February 26th, followed by the immediate restoration of sidewalks to their permanent state.

According to Thai News Agency, the Governor of MEA, Mr. Dichawat Chan-ee, conducted an inspection yesterday evening to oversee the advancement of this infrastructure transformation. The project focuses on burying overhead power lines underground on Pracha Rat Sai 2 Road, specifically in front of the Gateway at Bang Sue shopping center. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the local landscape and provide long-term benefits to residents.

The transformation on Pracha Rat Road Soi 2 spans 1.4 kilometers, extending from Bang Pho Pier to Pracha Chuen Road. Initiated in 2021, MEA aims to finalize the underground power distribution system by the end of 2025. The recent site visit by MEA's Governor highlights a pivotal moment as the project nears its completion.

Mr. Dichawat Chan-ee emphasized that the inspection was not only to assess progress but also to motivate MEA staff. The plan is to finish removing all poles and cables by the specified deadline, with prompt sidewalk restoration to ensure public safety and improve Bangkok's visual appeal. Additionally, the removed poles are slated for reuse in communities along the Thai-Cambodian border.

In the broader scope of converting overhead power lines to underground systems, MEA has successfully completed 105.3 kilometers to date. The target for 2026 is an additional 39.9 kilometers, aiming for a total of 145.2 kilometers. MEA is steadfast in its commitment to completing 317.3 kilometers by 2032 to fortify the power system's stability and address future electricity demands, aligning with its vision of "Energy for the Metropolitan Lifestyle."
