Guangzhou: Over 6,300 tons of fresh durian from Thailand arrived at Nansha Port in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, during the Labor Day holiday. The shipment, consisting of 356 containers carried by three express durian ships, docked between Saturday morning and Sunday morning, marking a busy weekend for durian distribution across China.
According to Thai News Agency, Nansha Port, the largest durian import port in China, is set to continue handling increased durian imports throughout the harvest season in Southeast Asian regions, expected to last from April to June in 2026. Statistics indicate that Nansha Customs inspected more than 9,500 tons of fresh durian between April 15 and 26.
Nansha Customs has enforced strict inspection and quarantine protocols on the imported durian to ensure consumer safety. Lin Xiaojing, head of the cold chain division at Nansha Customs, stated that the inspections include visual checks for pests and diseases, alongside random checks for safety indicators such as pesticides and heavy metals, employing stringent methods.
In anticipation of the increased durian supply, the Nansha Port fresh fruit market will host a durian festival on April 30th. The event will feature a "ship docks, open containers, immediate buying and selling" model, allowing consumers to purchase fresh durian directly. Available varieties will include the popular Monthong durian from Thailand and Musang King durian from Malaysia.
