Lat Phrao Brewery Fire Claims 32 Lives as Investigation Reveals Foam Insulation Ignited

Bangkok: The death toll from the devastating brewery fire in Lat Phrao has reached 32, with all victims' names now confirmed. The Institute of Forensic Medicine has reported that DNA samples have been collected from 30 families, and relatives have already claimed the bodies of 28 victims.

According to Thai News Agency, the atmosphere at the brewery site is somber, with mourners placing flowers, garlands, food, fruit, and drinks at the entrances to honor the deceased. Incense sticks, candles, and garlands adorn the site as a gesture of merit dedication. Officials from the Engineering Institute of Thailand under the Royal Patronage (EIT) have been on-site to gather further evidence.

Ms. Busakorn Saensuk, head of the Fire Protection Engineering branch, shared preliminary investigation findings. The engineering team discovered that sound-absorbing panels or ceiling materials were not overly thick. However, a steel structure above the ceiling had approximately 3 inches of foam insulation, which ignited and fueled the fire. This led to the accumulation of combustion gases, aligning with reports from injured individuals who noted a pungent smell.

The most severely damaged area was in front of the stage. When doors opened during the incident, outside air rushed in, exposing accumulated fuel gases to oxygen, causing an immediate fire. Most restaurant areas had a foam coating around 2 inches thick, while the stage and bar areas had a 3-inch coating both above and below.

Although flame retardants can delay ignition at specific temperatures, they failed to prevent the foam from igniting under the fire's intensity, contributing to the tragedy.
