Krungthai Bank and Partners Announce Carbon Credit Market Development for Low-Carbon Cities

Bangkok:Krungthai Bank, in partnership with the Stock Exchange of Thailand and various business partners, has announced an initiative to support low-carbon city projects through the development of a carbon credit market.

According to Thai News Agency, this partnership was revealed at the “Low Carbon Cities and Energy Security - Building System at Scale, Mobilizing Private Capital, Creating Jobs” event, held during the IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings 2026. The initiative, supported by the World Bank, aims to connect financial capabilities, market infrastructure, and private sector demand to support low-carbon investments in Thailand.

Krungthai Bank will facilitate the collection of qualifying carbon credits and link them with buyers. Meanwhile, the Stock Exchange of Thailand is set to develop a transparent auction and pricing platform to boost trading and business confidence. Companies like Grab, Thai Airways, ACEIS Electric and Power, and DriverAI have shown interest as potential buyers, creating demand in the carbon market and promoting clean energy projects and greenhouse gas emission reductions. All carbon credits must be verified according to standards before being traded, adhering to relevant agreements and regulations.

Mr. Payong Srivanich, President and CEO of Krungthai Bank, highlighted the potential of the carbon credit market to transform emission reduction into income and investment opportunities. The bank, along with the Department of Climate Change and Environment, SET, and business partners, is working to connect projects, data, and trading mechanisms. A national digital data platform is also being developed to lower transaction costs and expand market access for smaller projects.

Mr. Assadej Kongsiri, Director and President of the SET, expressed readiness to support Thailand’s transition to a low-carbon economy via a carbon credit auction platform, set to launch in Q2 2027. This platform will serve as a foundation for trading mandatory greenhouse gas emission rights in line with the upcoming Climate Change Act.

Ms. Chantsuda Thananitayaudom of Grab Thailand and Ms. Cherdchom Teodsathirasak of Thai Airways International both expressed their companies' commitment to participating in the Low-Carbon Credit projects, aiming to stimulate market demand and contribute to Thailand's low-carbon transition.

The LCC project is backed by a US$200 million loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development through EXIM BANK, guaranteed by the Thai government, to expand renewable energy investments and improve energy efficiency nationwide. Krungthai Bank leads as the project’s Coordinating and Management Agency, employing a Digital Measurement, Reporting, and Verification system to ensure data reliability and project registration with the Gold Standard.
