Hong Kong Ministry Collaborates with Thai Police to Combat Call Center Gangs

Bangkok: The Ministry of Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region engaged in discussions with Pol. Gen. Thachatchai Pitaneelabut, Inspector-General of the Royal Thai Police, to strategize on the suppression of call center gangs operating in Thailand's neighboring countries. The meeting aimed to enhance cooperation until these criminal networks are entirely dismantled.

According to Thai News Agency, the meeting took place today, where Pol. Gen. Thatchai, who serves as the Director of the Center for the Protection of Children, Women, Families, Human Trafficking Prevention and Suppression, and Fisheries, and the Director of the Center for the Suppression of Technology Crimes, met with Mr. Michael Cheuk, Deputy Secretary for Security of Hong Kong, and his team at the National Police Office. The discussions centered on addressing issues related to call center gangs using Thailand as a transit point and the broader problem of human trafficking in border areas.

The meeting emphasized the need for exchanging information on fraudulent schemes, such as impersonation of customer service staff and the creation of mule accounts. These schemes have been increasingly encountered by both Hong Kong and Thai authorities. The collaboration seeks to exchange crucial information and coordinate efforts to tackle these challenges effectively.

Mr. Michael Cheuk highlighted past incidents where Hong Kong and Chinese citizens were deceived into traveling to neighboring countries. He emphasized that these cases did not involve fraudulent activities occurring in Thailand, and Thailand does not support call center gangs. He assured that upon returning, he would hold a press conference to inform Hong Kong citizens about the safety of traveling in Thailand and commend the cooperation from Thai agencies.

Pol. Gen. Thachatchai reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to fostering international cooperation to combat call center gangs in neighboring regions, ensuring their eventual eradication from society.
