Bangkok: Waterways throughout Thailand were abuzz as the government launched the "Grand Songkran 69" event, aimed at elevating the Songkran festival to a world-class level and enhancing Thailand's cultural influence globally. Minister Surasak Panjaroenvorakul spearheaded the opening of the "Grand Songkran Rangnam 2026," emphasizing the festival's new UNESCO World Heritage status.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Surasak Panjaroenvorakul, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, inaugurated the 'Grand Songkran Festival: THE JOY OF THAI - Exploring Thai Fun' event yesterday, April 9, 2026. The ceremony was attended by high-profile figures, including Ms. Natriya Thaweewong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, and Ms. Thapanee Kiatpaiboon, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The event marks a significant effort to attract global tourists and boost the nation's tourism-driven economy.

Mr. Surasak articulated the government's vision to elevate the Songkran festival to an international status, following UNESCO's recognition of Songkran in Thailand as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity." He highlighted that this acknowledgment strengthens the festival's universal appeal and instills a sense of pride among Thais. The event is envisioned as a pivotal mechanism for rejuvenating Thailand's tourism landscape and enhancing its global image as a top-tier festival destination.

The festival's main goal is to highlight Thailand's rich cultural heritage while supporting the government's economic stimulus initiatives. By transforming the local Rangnam area into a premier water-play destination, the event seeks to generate revenue through innovative tourism activities in Bangkok and nearby regions. It aims to fuse traditional Thai identity with modern cultural elements through a Pop-Culture Festival featuring over 20 popular restaurants and a variety of entertainment activities and promotions.

The festival, running from April 9th to 14th, 2026, boasts a series of grand events, including a parade on the opening day with celebrated artists like Apo Nattawin and Jimmy Jitpol, and performances by over 60 T-POP artists. On April 13th, the main day of Songkran, a majestic parade will take place with the closure of the Victory Monument, led by artists such as Jeff Worakamon and Pond Naravich, ensuring a vibrant celebration of Thai tradition.
