Bangkok: The government emphasizes continuous care for Thai livestock, expediting the distribution of another 7.85 million doses of Lumpy Skin Disease vaccine to control the epidemic and build confidence in Thai livestock. It is indicated that applications can be received at livestock offices nationwide.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anukul Prueksanusak, Deputy Government Spokesperson, revealed that the government prioritizes the development of Thai livestock to increase production capacity, quality, and competitiveness with foreign countries, as well as preventing severe outbreaks of diseases that affect and damage farmers. The government has allocated the 2024 fiscal year budget, the central budget, and the reserve budget for emergencies or necessities to control lumpy skin disease in cattle and buffalo, in accordance with the Cabinet resolution on August 13, 2024, to purchase 7,850,000 doses of the vaccine.
In 2025, Chiang Rai Province will be the first to receive more than 80,000 doses of the vaccine, covering the entire cattle and buffalo population in the province. It will also serve as a pilot area for the creation of disease-free zones and the construction of quarantine pens for export, according to the plan of the Department of Livestock Development. The second round of vaccines is scheduled for distribution in Tak Province on February 28, 2025, with further distribution planned across other provinces in Thailand.
Mr. Anukul stated that animal epidemics remain a significant hurdle for the export of Thai livestock products, particularly foot-and-mouth disease and lumpy skin disease. Effective disease prevention and control, along with strengthening immunity against lumpy skin disease in cattle and buffalo, are crucial for gaining acceptance and trust in Thai livestock products from international markets.
The government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, is actively negotiating to open the market for exporting live cattle and products to the People's Republic of China. This matter is currently under consideration by the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China. If successful, it is expected to help stimulate prices and increase income for Thai farmers. Farmers can request vaccination services against Lumpy Skin Disease at provincial or district livestock offices near their homes or through other cooperating agencies that support the operations of the Department of Livestock Development, such as dairy cooperatives, milk collection centers, and local administrative organizations.
