Uttaradit: The government supports the creation of "Siraphorn Wichitraphon" ornaments from sugarcane leaves by students and teachers in Ban Khoi Suea, Uttaradit Province, to utilize leftover agricultural materials, reduce burning, and PM 2.5.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Karom Polpornklang, Deputy Government Spokesperson, revealed that teachers and students from Prathom 6 to Mathayom 3 of Ban Khoi Sung School in Tron District have collaborated to create functional headdresses and ornaments. These are designed for use in performances and cultural events and are crafted from sugarcane leaves, a byproduct of local farming.
Mr. Karom explained that sugarcane is a primary economic crop in the region, with planting occurring from November to February. The harvest season generates an excess of sugarcane leaves, traditionally burned by farmers, contributing to pollution and PM 2.5 dust. In response, teachers and students devised a method to transform these leaves into durable Thai sugarcane leaf ornaments. The process involves cutting and pounding the leaves, mixing them with boiled rice flour and water, and kneading with additional materials to create a clay for molding. The molded ornaments are sun-dried, painted, and adorned with decorative elements.
The initiative aligns with government policy to minimize sugarcane burning and reduces PM 2.5 emissions. It also encourages students to recognize the value of sugarcane leaves, decreases reliance on costly rented accessories, and provides income opportunities through accessory rentals. Additionally, it fosters the continuation of Thai art and craftsmanship among the youth, utilizing abundant local resources without additional costs.
