Bangkok:Designers from over 100 countries are using "Thai silk" as their canvas to create unique fashion pieces as part of the 'Amazing Thailand Global Thai Silk Exhibition.' This event is organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand in collaboration with the Thai Silk and Culture Promotion Association, aiming to showcase international identities through the charm of Thai silk.
According to Thai News Agency, the exhibition highlights the diverse cultural expressions reflected in the designs, coinciding with Thailand's hosting of the 2026 Annual Meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group. This initiative seeks to present Thailand's cultural heritage and unique identity to the global community.
The Thai Silk and Culture Promotion Association has distributed silk to designers worldwide, encouraging them to create garments that express their country's identity and traditions through this traditional material. Edward Kittipong, the association's founder, emphasized the significance of promoting Thai culture and traditions, especially as Thailand last hosted the World Bank meeting 35 years ago. The event expects participation from 191 countries, with over 15,000 attendees, including international media.
Building on previous experiences, such as the 2022 APEC summit, the association has expanded its collaboration to international designers, providing them with more than 500 meters of black Thai silk. This choice of material holds cultural significance, related to a period of mourning for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, and Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha. This has sparked interest among international designers in exploring the origins and meanings of Thai silk.
The Amazing Thailand Global Thai Silk Exhibition is scheduled from October 11-18, 2026, at Siam Paragon, featuring an opening ceremony on October 12 and the Amazing Thailand Grand Fashion Show on October 16 at the Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit. The event aims to present the beauty of Thai silk through the perspectives of designers worldwide, promoting cultural exchange and understanding.
