Samut prakan: A young man opened fire in the middle of an alley, critically injuring an elderly woman who was collecting junk.
According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred in Soi Bearing 48, Mueang Samut Prakan District, at approximately 3:30 AM when a gang of teenagers on motorcycles confronted 50-year-old Thongchan, a scrap collector. CCTV footage captured the moment gunshots were fired, causing Thongchan to collapse due to a gunshot wound to the left side of her head. The teenagers swiftly fled the scene, leaving Thongchan in critical condition. A passerby quickly called for help, and she was transported to Samut Prakan Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Following the incident, police examined the crime scene and discovered two .380 caliber shell casings and a suspicious object resembling a ping-pong bomb near Thongchan's cart, which was parked about 30 meters from the alley's entrance. The area was secured, and the bomb disposal unit was called in to handle the suspicious items.
Residents in the area reported hearing multiple motorcycles entering the alley, home to nearly 20 teenagers, followed by a single gunshot. The teenagers were known for gathering and causing disturbances in the neighborhood. Witnesses also recalled hearing loud shouts and the sound of bombs, followed by the sound of motorcycles as the group fled the scene.
In response, police collected evidence and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved. Six youths have been apprehended for questioning, although none have admitted to the shooting. Authorities are working with forensic experts to analyze gunpowder residue on the suspects' hands to determine the shooter. The investigation is ongoing as police seek to apprehend all responsible parties and bring them to justice.
