Bangkok: The Commissioner of the Crime Suppression Division has announced that former disciples provided significant evidence leading to the arrest warrant for "Former Abbot Atichoti" due to alleged inappropriate conduct and financial irregularities. According to Thai News Agency, Police Lieutenant General Nattasak Chaowanasai, Commander of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), revealed that the case originated from an anonymous tip received in July, which included video evidence and allegations of embezzlement against the former abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan Royal Temple.
The investigation, prompted by concerns about the former abbot's personal behavior with a female devotee and suspicious financial transactions, uncovered irregularities in funds that were meant to be deposited into the temple's account. Instead, these funds were allegedly redirected to individuals and used to establish a foundation, with donation receipts issued in the temple's name.
Police Lieutenant General Nattasak emphasized that temple funds should be strictly used for their intended purpose. The investigation revealed attempts to alter the flow of funds, indicating possible involvement of one or two additional individuals. The relationship between the former abbot and his female associate reportedly began two years ago, but the police's primary focus remains on investigating financial misconduct.
The arrest operation, conducted this morning, saw cooperation from the former abbot. Searches were carried out at five locations across Pathum Thani, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, and Bangkok, resulting in the seizure of cash, documents, and other evidence from the abbot's quarters. Police Lieutenant General Nattasak stressed the thoroughness of the two-month investigation, given the high profile and respected status of the accused monk.
Crucial evidence, including video clips and financial documents, is part of the case file and will be used to support prosecution. The possibility of bail will consider the accused's circumstances and whether there is a risk of evidence tampering. The police are actively tracing financial transactions to identify any further involvement before concluding the investigation. A press conference by the Central Investigation Bureau is scheduled for tomorrow at 11:00 AM to provide more details on the case.
