Foreign Minister Aims to Expand Efforts to Disrupt Scammer Networks

Bangkok: The Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs hopes that the Global Partnership stemming from the online crime and scammer conference hosted by Thailand will facilitate coordinated efforts to quickly disrupt online crime worldwide, and plans to build upon this success at the conference in Vienna.

According to Thai News Agency, Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew, in an interview regarding the results of the International Conference on Global Partnership to Combat Cybercrime, hosted by Thailand on December 17-18, stated that the event announced the formation of a group called the Global Partnership. This global cooperation group aims to combat online crime and scammers by serving as a central driving force within various cooperation frameworks. The group includes representatives from both Asia and other regions. The conference proposed several measures to intensify the fight against online crime and scammers, such as information exchange, capacity building for countries lacking sufficient resources, law enforcement, and establishing a point of contact among key countries to facilitate faster communication and action upon receiving information about these activities.

Furthermore, the conference discussed the establishment of a temporary special working group to improve coordination, with plans to meet again in 2026 in Vienna, Austria, where the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is located. Mr. Sihasak expressed hope that the outcomes of the conference in Thailand would be further developed at the Vienna meeting.

Regarding the goal of quickly disrupting online crime, Mr. Sihasak emphasized that many issues were discussed at the meeting hosted by Thailand, with the most important being cutting off the funding sources for online crime. He highlighted the necessity of collaborating with various banks to trace the origins of the funds. Disrupting this network, he stated, would significantly reduce the problem and indicated that the efforts are on the right track.
