Bangkok: The FDA has issued an urgent warning to the public about the presence of sibutramine in illegal weight loss pills, specifically those marketed as Lishou products with foreign-language labels. These products are being sold online without FDA approval and pose significant health risks, including potentially life-threatening side effects.
According to Thai News Agency, Pharmacist Suphattra Bunserm, Secretary-General of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), highlighted a recent incident where a woman fainted and required immediate hospitalization after consuming such diet pills. The FDA, in collaboration with the Trat Provincial Public Health Office, discovered that the woman had ingested Lishou weight-loss products, which had already been flagged as dangerous by the FDA due to their sibutramine content. The FDA strongly advises consumers to avoid purchasing these products, as many that promise rapid weight loss are often counterfeit and hazardous.
Sibutramine, categorized as a Category 1 active substance, is banned for use in Thailand due to its dangerous nature, especially for individuals with cardiovascular issues, high blood pressure, or a history of stroke. Its side effects include insomnia, dizziness, and anxiety, and it can lead to elevated blood pressure and a rapid heart rate. In high doses, the substance can be fatal.
The FDA urges consumers to report any instances of advertising or sales of these products through various media channels.
