Bangkok: The new Election Commission chairman has announced that the next election is expected to take place on February 8, 2026. Despite the current tense situation on the Thai-Cambodian border, the chairman insists he is under no pressure.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Narong Klanwarin, the recently appointed chairman of the Election Commission, has confirmed the commission's preparedness to hold the election following the dissolution of parliament. A crucial meeting to finalize the election date is scheduled for December 15-16, and all necessary timelines have been meticulously planned. Mr. Klanwarin foresees a high probability that the election will occur on February 8, 2026.
The situation at the Thai-Cambodian border is being closely monitored but is not currently viewed as a barrier to conducting the election. The Election Commission has emphasized its impartiality and commitment to fairness, amidst perceptions of being a "blue Election Commission."
Regarding the referendum, discussions are anticipated with cabinet representatives next week. It has been reiterated that the caretaker cabinet possesses the legal authority to carry out the referendum. For budget approvals, proposals, particularly those involving large projects or border areas, must be reviewed by the Election Commission on a case-by-case basis.
