Bangkok: The Economic Party has proposed significant amendments to three laws, focusing on increasing the death penalty for corruption and repeat offenders, with the stipulation that executions be carried out within a year. This proposal was announced at a press conference held at the Parliament building by Mr. Chris Potranan, Mr. Peerapol Kanokwalai, Ms. Angsana Niamwanichkul, and General Rangsi Kitiyanasap, the leader of the Economic Party.
According to Thai News Agency, the proposed changes include amendments to the Corrections Act, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Criminal Code. These amendments aim to redefine "serious offenses," improve incarceration regulations, and tighten penalties for official misconduct. The party emphasized the need for a robust framework to handle serious crimes and called on Members of Parliament to support and sign the draft laws for submission to the House of Representatives.
The key points of the proposed amendments include the introduction of a record-keeping system for categorizing inmates by risk level, assigning the Supreme Court as the authority for parole decisions, and setting criteria for harsher sentencing in serious cases. Additionally, the amendments seek to eliminate the statute of limitations for certain offenses and increase penalties for officials found guilty of corruption or misconduct.
The Economic Party believes these legislative changes are essential for strengthening the legal framework against serious crimes and is urging like-minded Members of Parliament to back the initiative, ensuring its inclusion in the legislative agenda for further consideration.
