Double-Decker Buses Granted Temporary Access to Highway 304 Amid Border Clashes

Bangkok: Double-decker buses have been granted temporary access to use Highway 304, Kabin Buri - Wang Nam Khiao, as a safety measure amid ongoing border clashes. The Central Land Transport Control Committee has authorized this change to avoid the conflict zones near the Thai-Cambodian border, specifically on Highway 348.

According to Thai News Agency, the Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, Mr. Sorapong Paitoonpong, explained that the decision comes in response to unrest and escalating violence along the border since December 8, 2015. The violence has compromised public safety, particularly on Highway 348's Kaew Phet Phloi - Chong Tako section in Sa Kaeo Province. This area is near the conflict zone, prompting the Burapha Task Force to impose a curfew from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM in four border districts. The committee's decision allows non-regular double-decker buses to use Highway 304, ensuring public safety until the curfew is lifted.

Bus operators using Highway 304 must adhere to strict safety measures to prevent accidents on steep inclines. These measures include speed supervision, thorough vehicle braking system tests, readiness inspections for buses and drivers, and additional driver training for navigating steep inclines. The Department of Land Transport will enforce these conditions rigorously to guarantee public safety.

Transport operators wishing to divert their non-scheduled double-decker buses from Highway 348 to Highway 304 must submit applications electronically via a Google Form or QR code before their trip. This process underscores the Department's commitment to maintaining public safety while facilitating necessary travel adjustments due to the conflict.

The Department of Land Transport emphasizes that these measures are urgent and essential to avoid dangerous areas affected by the ongoing border conflict. The public is assured of their safety during travel under these enhanced protocols, as reiterated by the Director-General.
