Department of Airports Discloses Progress on Phatthalung Airport Project

Phatthalung: The Department of Airports has unveiled the latest developments in the Phatthalung Airport project, which is set to enhance air transportation and support economic growth and tourism in the lower southern region.

According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Airports announced that the Phatthalung Airport project has been allocated a budget of 42.6926 million baht for the 2026-2027 period. This funding is earmarked for the study and design of essential infrastructure such as the runway, taxiways, aircraft parking apron, and other components. Additionally, an updated Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report will be conducted to ensure the project aligns with the local context and benefits the public. The initiative aims to bolster transportation infrastructure in the South, enhancing the economic, tourism, and logistics potential of Phatthalung province and its environs.

The Department of Airports completed a feasibility study for the Phatthalung Airport project in 2021 and communicated the findings to the Ministry of Transport in 2022. The study projected that in its initial phase, Phatthalung Airport would accommodate approximately 214,129 passengers and 1,400 flights annually. The economic feasibility analysis revealed an Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) of 14.70% and a Benefit-Cost Ratio (B/C) of 1.26, underscoring the demand for air travel in the area.

In terms of site preparation, a topographical survey indicated that the originally designated area was under the Department of Rice's jurisdiction, serving as a rice research center. To mitigate impacts on rice research and development, Phatthalung Province plans to relocate the research center, and the land acquisition process is in progress.

The Department of Airports is collaborating with central, provincial, and local agencies to gather input and suggestions from all sectors. This collaborative approach aims to ensure the project's development is comprehensive, transparent, and aligned with the community's needs.

The advancement of the Phatthalung Airport project lays a foundational role in improving air transportation in Phatthalung province and nearby areas. It promises to enhance transportation access, reduce travel burdens to major airports in other provinces, and solidify transportation connectivity in the lower southern region, ultimately boosting the quality of life and economic growth in the area.
