Concern Over News Coverage of “Nutpong” Regarding Infringement on Privacy Rights

Bangkok: The commissioner expressed concern over media coverage and social media reporting regarding the death of "Nutpong," stating it infringes on the right to privacy. Mr. Wasan Phailiklee, a member of the National Human Rights Commission, stated that some media outlets and social media users have presented and shared information regarding the death of Mr. Nattawut Ponglangka, or "Natpong," a Channel 8 reporter, in a manner that involved an intense investigation into the cause of death. This included the disclosure of CCTV footage, audio and video, private conversations or chats, and details about personal relationships.

According to Thai News Agency, the Human Rights Commission also noted that while everyone has the freedom to communicate, report news, or express opinions, the exercise of such freedom must take into account and be cautious of the impact on the right to privacy and the right to honor and reputation of others. In this case, this includes the deceased, their families, and relatives. In particular, media professionals, as guiding figures in society, must exercise special caution in presenting news that risks violating human rights and contradicting the law. As stipulated in the Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019), the use of personal data for any purpose without consent is prohibited, except when necessary for the public interest as authorized by law. Exceptions for media activities must be in accordance with professional ethics or in the public interest.

Therefore, we urge the media and all relevant parties to report on all cases with respect for the rights of those involved, in accordance with the Code of Ethics for the Journalism Profession, the Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2564 (2021), and the guidelines for obtaining and presenting news and news images by the media. We sincerely hope that society will cooperate in raising awareness of the right to privacy and will not accept news reporting that infringes upon the rights and dignity of others.
