Bangkok: The first hearing in the imprisonment case of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has concluded, with Mr. Chanchai Issarasenarak, a former Democrat MP, expressing confidence in the court's ability to deliver fair judgment to all parties involved. The court session included examination of the Department of Corrections, the current prison commander, and the medical team from the Corrections Department. Legal issues and medical examinations conducted prior to transferring inmates to the hospital for treatment were scrutinized.
According to Thai News Agency, the court inquired about the standard procedures followed when an inmate falls ill, establishing that the first point of care is the Corrections Department Hospital. If an inmate's condition does not improve, they are then transferred to an outside hospital under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The court ensured that Thaksin's legal representation was given ample opportunity to present their case, maintaining justice for all parties.
Further hearings will involve additional witnesses, including nurses, relevant officials, the former prison commander, the chief physician of the Police General Hospital, and representatives from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The court also requested an investigation report from the NHRC and the latest resolution from the Medical Council. While six more hearings have been scheduled, no summons has been issued for Thaksin himself.
