Bangkok: Chalermchai Sri-on has stepped down as the leader of the Democrat Party due to health concerns, prompting the party to appoint Pramuan Pongthawaradej as the acting leader. The party now faces the task of organizing a general meeting within 60 days to elect a new executive committee, as it gears up for the forthcoming elections.
According to Thai News Agency, Assistant Professor Dr. Jenjira Rattanapian, acting spokesperson for the Democrat Party, held a press conference at the party headquarters to clarify the leadership transition. Mr. Pramuan, who serves as the Chairman of the House of Representatives and Deputy Party Leader, will assume the role of acting leader as per party regulations. Dr. Chalermchai's decision to resign was influenced by his health issues, which he believed could hinder his ability to lead effectively during the upcoming elections.
Dr. Jenjira emphasized that the party will adhere to its regulations by holding a general meeting to elect a new executive committee within the stipulated 60-day period. She addressed social media speculations regarding the leadership change, asserting that the Democrat Party possesses qualified individuals ready to lead, regardless of whether they are established or emerging members.
Democrat Party Director Thanitphon Chaiyanant commented on the internal dynamics following Dr. Chalermchai's sudden resignation. He acknowledged that while the leadership change might cause disappointment, it would not deter the party from its ideological commitments. He expressed confidence that the new leadership would successfully carry the party's mission forward, especially with elections anticipated in four months.
Thanitpol assured that the process to select a new party leader would be transparent, with the nominee requiring endorsement from at least half of the general meeting attendees. Candidates must be at least 20 years old and have at least two consecutive years of party membership, although there is a provision for waiving this requirement with general meeting approval.
Addressing concerns about potential defections of MPs to other parties as the elections approach, Thanitpol acknowledged this as a common issue but reaffirmed the Democrat Party's resilience and readiness to continue its national work. He concluded by encouraging party members to remain steadfast in their commitment to the party's ideals and mission.
"I would like to reaffirm that despite the changes to the Democrat Party, I would like to encourage all party members to remain in the party, as well as anyone who may become a future party member, to remain committed to its ideals and continue to work for the nation," said Mr. Thanitpol.
