Cambodia Accused of Secretly Planting Landmines on Thai Border

Bangkok: "Big Lek," also known as General Apirat Kongsompong, has unveiled evidence suggesting that Cambodia has been secretly planting landmines along its border with Thailand. He invoked Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, asserting that Thailand is being unjustly perceived as a larger aggressor against a smaller nation. He stressed that Thailand is committed to not intertwining military conflict with international diplomacy. Cambodia's reluctance to engage in Generally Border Committee (GBC) talks has further complicated the situation, prompting General Apirat to declare his unwillingness to participate in any meeting deemed unsatisfactory.

According to Thai News Agency, General Natthaphol Nakpanich, Thailand's Minister of Defence, provided updates on the Thai-Cambodian border situation and the looming GBC discussions. He mentioned that if the forthcoming secretariat meeting does not align with his expectations, he would refuse to sign any agreements. Highlighting Cambodia's past actions, General Natthaphol alleged multiple violations by Cambodia, including breaching the Ostava Convention through the possession, production, and use of landmines. He also accused Cambodia of using historical sites as military bases and exploiting civilian areas as launch sites for BM-21 missiles.

General Natthaphol outlined a three-stage approach to addressing the conflict, initially focusing on peaceful negotiations before escalating to a ceasefire attempt. Despite a signed peace agreement, evidence suggests that Cambodia continued to lay landmines, prompting Thailand to reassess its strategy. General Natthaphol criticized Cambodia's dual stance of declaring a ceasefire while preparing for prolonged conflict, emphasizing Thailand's commitment to international law and the peace declaration.

While expressing concerns about international perceptions favoring Cambodia, General Natthaphol remained confident in Thailand's adherence to truth and international law. He acknowledged the challenges faced in countering Cambodia's information warfare but expressed faith in the capabilities of Thai media and military forces. As the situation evolves, General Natthaphol emphasized the importance of separating military actions from international relations and ensuring the safety of Cambodian officials attending future GBC meetings.

The ongoing border tensions underscore the complex dynamics between Thailand and Cambodia, with both nations grappling with historical grievances and international scrutiny. As negotiations continue, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the escalating conflict.
