Bank Of Thailand Imposes New Limits On Online Gold Trading Platforms

Bangkok: The Bank of Thailand is set to implement new regulations on online gold trading platforms, restricting transactions to 50 million baht per person per platform starting March 1, 2026. These measures aim to increase transparency and stabilize the Thai baht by curbing speculative activities.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that these regulations will specifically target platforms where transactions are conducted in Thai baht. The initiative seeks to regulate high-value transactions that could impact the currency's stability. The measures exclude transactions conducted in US dollars, general gold shops, and certain gold savings platforms.

Key aspects of the new regulations include a 50 million baht limit for buying or selling gold on each platform, excluding individuals with gold holdings exceeding this amount as of January 30, 2026. These individuals can liquidate their holdings without a time constraint. Additional conditions stipulate that payments must be conducted electronically, personal account use is mandatory, and full payment is required upfront, prohibiting net settlement and short selling.

The deputy spokesperson emphasized that these measures are designed to mitigate the volatility of the Thai baht and improve gold trading standards. These restrictions will not apply to gold businesses or manufacturers, and general customers trading below the threshold will remain unaffected. The government backs the Bank of Thailand's efforts to foster transparency and ensure economic stability, enhancing confidence in the nation's financial system in the long term.
